DR. STEVEN OLMOS: One of the important topics that needs to be covered is the safety of these oral appliances, and as you can see, with the fluid filled bags and the constantly changing environment that is adapting to the needs of the patient that it doesn’t position them in any awkward or produce any pathological relationships in the TM joint. In fact, with the vertical change, it allows for decompression and may be all that's necessary, in some situations, for the patient's disk to relocate on its own, with just them sitting there comfortably in the chair. This is very important because, in some applications of various products, the positioning of the appliance with a static positioner can cause a situation where the disk can be displaced. For instance, a anterior displacement technique, without proper perpendicular forces in the anterior area, as demonstrated by poor placement as so, you can see what happens to that condyle with improper placement and angulation, maybe enough to dislocate a disk, or at least prevent the recapture of it.
